The most frequent error in dairy and beef management is pushing for fast production spikes by overfeeding finely ground grains (corn, wheat, barley).

When ruminants receive excess starch without adequate structural fiber, yield may surge briefly before triggering a metabolic decline: rumen pH plummets, beneficial cellulolytic microbes die, milk fat crashes, and lameness emerges. This condition is known as Subacute Rumen Acidosis (SARA).

  • Reduced Rumination: Fewer than 50–60% of resting cows actively chewing their cud.
  • Subclinical Laminitis: Endotoxins trigger hoof corium inflammation 6–10 weeks post-acidosis, causing sole ulcers and white line disease.
